Microchipping: |
|
| Of course you care for your pet. However, even the best loved and well-trained animals can escape or get lost - they could get out accidentally through doors left open by children or visitors, be frightened by loud or strange noises, wander off whilst on holiday... the possibilities are endless. Whatever the reason, you cannot be sure that a collar and tag will still be there and be legible when the animal is found. The frightening facts: every day, unidentified pets are humanely destroyed in animal homes throughout the country. Many of these animals could have been reunited with their worried owners if only identification had been possible. The good news is that there is now a simple way to ensure that your pet can be easily identified wherever he or she goes. A tiny microchip with an I.D. code unique to you and your pet can be injected under the skin in the same way that the vet regularly vaccinates against disease. When your pet is picked up a special scanner can detect the microchip and read the unique code in much the same way as barcodes are read at supermarket checkouts. All your microchip details are recorded on a computer database which is open 24 hours a day. When your details come up, you will be contacted immediately. Scanners are routinely used in rescue kennels and dog wardens all over the country. Their use is also standard procedure at RSPCA and SSPCA homes, the Cats Protection League and by cruelty or welfare societies. If you have more than one pet, each one can be identified separately and each will be given its unique I.D. code. Microchipping is completely safe for your pet and causes no more discomfort than any other injection. In dogs and cats it is permanently placed in the loose skin at the back of the neck and can be given to pets of any age, breed or species, from Great Danes to budgerigars. Most pet welfare organisations recommend microchipping, and it is supported by the Kennel Club. So, get your puppy microchipped, they'd be lost without it. |
