Grooming plays a very important part in caring for your dog and cat, and helps the bonding process. From the very outset, you should be handling your new dog and getting it used to you being the master. Vicki our resident groomer will be happy to advise on all aspects of grooming, bathing, skin and coat care. She gladly welcomes pups at an early age.
Grooming requirements vary from breed to breed. Some require daily brushing and combing, others need less. Having equipped yourself with a comb and brush, make it a part of the daily routine to brush some part of your dog's body. Good behaviour should be rewarded with a treat or play afterwards. Your puppy will soon associate grooming with fun. Take this opportunity to handle the pup's ears and feet, and look inside the mouth. Brush its teeth using toothpaste. Pups can be bathed as often as needed.
Your early efforts and patience will be well-rewarded. I would recommend an early visit to the grooming salon to introduce your new dog to the staff. Again, it's all part of the process of socialisation, when your pup is adapting and learning to behave in its new environment.
